His passion for sports developed early; he played hockey, baseball, tennis, and golf, reaching competitive levels in both hockey and baseball. Notably, he played Junior A hockey and was scouted by the Boston Red Sox as a potential pitcher. His interest in sports continued into adulthood, and he added weightlifting to his activities.

He entered Dalhousie Medical School in 2000 and earned his Doctor of Medicine degree in 2004.
