Dr. Edward R. McInnis, Lt. (N), MD, CCFP, is a seasoned professional in both family and emergency medicine with extensive experience across ten years in emergency and trauma care and sixteen years as a family physician. In addition to his medical career, he fulfills roles as a family man, athlete, lieutenant (N) in the Canadian Armed Forces, Navy reservist, and dedicated volunteer.

The Early Years

Dr. McInnis was born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada, and is the eldest of four children. His passion for sports developed early; he played hockey, baseball, tennis, and golf, reaching competitive levels in both hockey and baseball. Notably, he played Junior A hockey and was scouted by the Boston Red Sox as a potential pitcher. His interest in sports continued into adulthood, and he added weightlifting to his activities.

His robust work ethic became apparent from a young age. He managed a paper route at the age of ten and entered the workforce with a full-time job at McDonald’s when he was just thirteen.

Education, Professional Licensure and Certifications

Dr. McInnis’s educational background is comprehensive and impressive. He earned his BBA in 1992 from Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and spent some time traveling across the United States. He later obtained a BSc (Honors) in Biochemistry and Genetics in 1997 from Dalhousie University, where he also completed an Epidemiology Certification in 2002. He entered Dalhousie Medical School in 2000 and earned his Doctor of Medicine degree in 2004. His postgraduate training in Emergency and Family Medicine was completed at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario.

He holds several professional certifications, including licensure from the Medical Council of Canada (MCC), a Commissioned Rank as Sub-Lieutenant, and certification from the Canadian College of Family Physicians (CCFP), with a promotion to Lieutenant (N) in the Royal Canadian Navy.

Honors and Awards

Throughout his career, Dr. McInnis has received numerous accolades, including academic excellence and professional service. These include the Prince Edward Island Top Medical Student Scholarship, the Burke Certificate for Promise in Family Medicine, and special recognition for his service in the Canadian Armed Forces with a Meritorious Service Citation and an Honorable Discharge.

Academic Experience

Throughout his professional life, Dr. McInnis has held several prestigious academic positions. He has served as an Associate Professor at the Department of Biological Laboratory Studies at Dalhousie University, a Senior Post Graduate Clinical Instructor at McMaster University, and a Senior Professor and Evaluator at the Canadian Forces School of Physician Assistants in CFB Borden, Ontario.

Serving His Country

His service to the country is notable, with nine years as a medical officer in the Canadian Armed Forces and ongoing commitment as a Class B reservist in the Royal Canadian Navy. His military career has been diverse, including deployment in the Disaster Assistance Response Team (D.A.R.T.), roles in bio-terrorism consultation, and clinical instruction in the Canadian Forces Physician Assistant Program.

Clinical Experience and Medical Practice

Dr. McInnis was an Emergency Physician at McMaster University Hospital for four years before transitioning to family practice, where he became the Director of Care at Wasaga/Angus Community Health Center. In 2010, he further committed to serving as a Class B reservist in the Medical Division of the Canadian Armed Forces.

Volunteer Work

Volunteering has always been integral to his character. During his medical school years, he provided medical care at the Barrington Street Shelter in Halifax. He continued his volunteer efforts in homeless shelters in Hamilton and Toronto, where he also worked in an attached STD clinic.

A Family Man, A Man of Faith

He is a father to three daughters and a son and actively participates in their lives and supports their various interests, including sports and arts. He has volunteered as a minor hockey coach and a figure skating parent volunteer for many years.

Dr. Edward R. McInnis is a devoted Christian who attends Mapleview Christian Church with his family, demonstrating his commitment to both his faith and community.
